With ‘heartbeat’ I want to represent the market building as the beating heart of this area – connecting its past with the present day to allow visitors to re-examine its role at the heart of London’s life,
These are the words of photographer Charles Petillon as he describes his vision with project Heartbeat, an entry in the London Design Festival. The project is made of a metal frame supporting no less than 100,000 white balloons of different sizes. Among the balloons are installed a series of pulsating lights representing the beating heart of Covent Garden market, in London’s West End. The pulsating, cloud-like structure is not only a photographer’s wet dream, but also manages to integrate beautifully with the building and the environment.
