Today we present to you Ben Young, a New Zealand born artist, with a very common talent but featuring a unique form of expression. Boat builder by trade, Ben transforms, what in reality are, simple sheets of glass in beautiful and one-of-a-kind pieces of art by layering them together to give a piece detail, volume and a unique interaction with light. As the artist himself describes, he is fascinated by the liquid properties of glass, how it interacts with light and even the way it breaks. Thow this may come as a surprise the process that takes Ben from idea to finished work involves no digital tools at all, this, as Ben tells us, gives the work a little something more.
I work with 2D shapes and have to figure out how to translate that into a 3D finished product. Sometimes my start point changes dramatically as shapes can be limited – I can’t create any internal right angles – so I have to find a way to layer the glass to create certain shapes, – Ben Young
